Obama, Clinton unite at JFK's grave

Obama, Clinton unite at JFK's grave

Washington (AFP) - A pair of Democratic presidents, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton silently honored John F. Kennedy at the former US leader's grave Wednesday, marking the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

Obama and Clinton, along with First Lady Michelle Obama and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, laid a large blue and white wreath on the sun-dappled grave of JFK, who was gunned down in Dallas on November 22, 1963.

They then stood together, with hands on hearts, as a bugler played the US military lament "Taps" before observing a moment of silence.
Extended members of the Kennedy clan looked on at the tableau of presidential power -- past, present, and possibly future.
The observance came after Obama awarded Bill Clinton and 15 other luminaries of the arts, sport, science and innovation the highest honor for US civilians, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was first minted by Kennedy.

Later Wednesday, Obama will pay tribute to Kennedy's legacy at a speech at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington honoring medal awardees.
The Kennedy grave and eternal flame is in Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington on a hillside with a paved area fashioned from Cape Cod granite quarried from near the Kennedy clan's home base in Massachusetts.
The eternal flame was lit by Kennedy's wife Jacqueline Kennedy during his funeral in 1963 and she was buried beside her husband after her own death in 1994.

The poignant moment of remembrance came two days before the official half-century anniversary of the death of Kennedy, who was gunned down in an open-top limousine in Dallas, Texas, in a crime which traumatized the world.
The ceremonies have sparked a prolonged period of national and media reflection on the unfinished legacy of Kennedy, his tragedy-crossed family and of the evocative period in the early 1960s when his political star illuminated the world.

Kennedy's closest living relative, his daughter Caroline, however, was not at Wednesday's ceremony. An early supporter of Obama's presidential ambitions, she has just set off on a new chapter of her life as the US ambassador to Tokyo.
The joint Obama-Clinton appearance at the grave site represented the latest show of unity between two political power families who waged a bitter 2008 Democratic presidential nominating duel.

Hillary Clinton is now the red-hot favorite to land the Democratic nomination for the 2016 election -- but has not said whether she will make another run for the White House.
Presidents Clinton and Obama, two-term leaders both, laid claim to the legacy of John F. Kennedy in their own White House runs.
Clinton was famously pictured meeting Kennedy at an event in the White House Rose Garden in July 1963, and has reminisced about how he set eyes on the presidency himself after shaking JFK's hand.

Obama, who was two years old when the 35th US president was killed, accepted Kennedy's torch of Democratic Party idealism in a key moment in the 2008 campaign -- which irked the Clintons -- when president Kennedy's late brother, senator Edward Kennedy endorsed Obama at American University in Washington.
The two presidents stood together at a painful political moment for Obama, when he may be looking for political inspiration, after being brought low by the botched implementation of his signature health care law.
A CBS News poll published Wednesday found that the president's approval rating was down to 37 percent -- his lowest ever.

In the Medal of Freedom ceremony, Obama said that Clinton's presidency proved that it was possible to grow the economy, cut the deficit and invest in science, technology and education -- remarks which mirrored his own core political argument to American voters.
Kennedy's killing was blamed on a gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, who was said to be acting alone.
But the 50 years since have been replete with conspiracy theories centering on whether Oswald was the true culprit and if he was acting on his own initiative or was part of a wider plot.

Pennsylvania pastor who performed gay wedding suspended

A United Methodist minister from southeastern Pennsylvania who was convicted under church law of officiating at his son's same-sex wedding ceremony was suspended for 30 days Tuesday and told he will lose his credentials if he violates any of the church's rules in that time.
The same jury of fellow pastors that convicted Rev. Frank Schaefer on Monday of breaking his vows told him he must surrender his credentials if he can't reconcile his new calling to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community with the laws from the church's Book of Discipline.

Before the punishment ruling, Schaefer, who was convicted for officiating at his son's 2007 wedding ceremony in Massachusetts, told the jury Tuesday that he is unrepentant and refused to promise he wouldn't perform more gay unions.
Rather than beg for mercy Tuesday in the trial that has rekindled debate within the nation's largest mainline Protestant denomination over church policies on homosexuality and same-sex marriage, the pastor upped the stakes, telling jurors that he has been called by God to be an advocate for the rights of LGBT people.
The church "needs to stop judging people based on their sexual orientation," he said. "We have to stop the hate speech. We have to stop treating them as second-class Christians."

The nation's largest mainline Protestant denomination accepts gay and lesbian members, but it rejects the practice of homosexuality as "incompatible with Christian teaching."

Schaefer donned a rainbow-colored stole on the witness stand and told jurors it symbolized his commitment to the cause.
"I will never be silent again," he said, as some of his supporters wept in the gallery. "This is what I have to do."
Jon Boger, who filed the initial complaint against Schaefer, was outraged by the pastor's recalcitrance. The career Naval officer grew up in Zion United Methodist Church of Iona, the church that Schaefer has led for 11 years.
"Frank Schaefer sat here and openly rebuked the United Methodist Church, its policies, standards and doctrines," Bolger said when called as a rebuttal witness. "He should no longer be in service as a minister of the United Methodist Church, not at Iona, not anywhere else."
Earlier Tuesday, the Methodists' prosecutor called former members of Schaefer's church who said his conduct split the congregation, and experts who said the punishment should serve as a deterrent to other like-minded clergy.
Christina Watson said her family left Schaefer's church because they no longer wanted to be "subjected to the preaching and teaching" of Schaefer.
"To me, it wasn't a good Christian example for ministers to say it's OK to break the rules of your church," she testified.
The Rev. Paul Stallworth, who leads a United Methodist task force on sexuality and abortion, testified that church law requires jurors to "openly rebuke" Schaefer so that fellow clergy will think twice before breaking it.
Schaefer had previously testified that he performed his son's 2007 wedding in Massachusetts out of love, not a desire to flout church teaching on homosexuality.
But Tuesday's testimony made clear he has had a change of heart.
"I have to minister to those who hurt and that's what I'm doing," said Schaefer.
The prosecutor, the Rev. Christopher Fisher, invited Schaefer to "repent of your actions" and pledge never again to perform a homosexual union.
"I cannot," Schaefer replied.
His son, Tim Schaefer, told jurors he knew he was putting his father in a difficult position by asking him to officiate his wedding. But he concluded he would hurt his father's feelings if he didn't ask.
Schaefer said he hoped his father's trial would start a larger conversation in the denomination.
Bishop Alfred Gwinn, the presiding church officer in the trial, asked the jury to lay out how the sentence will be implemented and the 13 jurors left the courtroom to formulate an answer.

Lily Allen Confirms Herself for Glastonbury 2014, But Who Will Headline?

Lily Allen Confirms Herself for Glastonbury 2014, But Who Will Headline?

Lily Allen is the first major act to confirm an appearance at Glastonbury Festival 2014.

The singer, who made her comeback with new single 'Hard Out Here,' confirmed the news on Nick Grimshaw's Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Tuesday (November 19 2013).

"It got confirmed yesterday," she said, "I'll be doing 16 weeks of festivals over the summer and then tour." Lily said Glastonbury would be her first "big" gig of 2014 and added: "It's the best festival, I think - that, and Fuji Rock in Japan,"

Allen's comeback has not been without its controversy - the video for her single appears to poke fun at highly sexualised promo clips by the likes of Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke, though some commentators accused it of racism, something the singer refutes.

"If anyone thinks for a second that I requested specific ethnicities for the video, they're wrong," she said, saying that the video was partly inspired by how close she came to havng extensive plastic surgery to get rid of her "mummy tummy." "Nobody's immune to the pressure to look thin," she told the Observer Magazine.

The headliners for Glastonbury Festival 2014 remain shrouded in mystery. Organiser Michael Eavis claimed all three had never played the festival before, though this can almost certainly be discounted given his track record.

Last month, his daughter Emily Eavis revealed that she is close to securing the first two headline acts and has "a few options" for the final spot.

"We are away in Cornwall this week and I've just been talking to an agent on the phone on the beach in the rain about one of our headliners!" she told NME. "We're definitely getting close to securing two and there are a few options for the third. It's annoying really as there are lots of great bands touring next year and we'd love to have them all. But rest assured, it's going to be one hell of a show - maybe even the best yet"

Dolly Parton appears to be a certainty for the "legends spot," though the headliners is a little more difficult to predict. Fleetwood Mac have long been rumored for a spot, while the return of Elbow could see Guy Garvey's men take another slot. Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters and Prince are all possibilities.

Who do you think will headline Glastonbury 2014?

UNBELIEVABLE PHOTOS: Check Out This 2 Yr Old Boy Who's Addicted To Cigarettes & Smokes 40 In A Day

At the age of two, this toddler shocked the world when photos of him were revealed as he was chain-smoking cigarettes.
Now, at age 5, he has reportedly kicked the habit, although he now seems to have another addiction. Food.

Aldi Rizal was discovered in a poor village in Sumatra, Indonesia, puffing on a cigarette while riding his tricycle.
After his lifestyle was discovered, he was taken for play therapy sessions in the capital Jakarta for two weeks to take his mind off his 40-a-day habit and learn to be a normal toddler for the first time.
Now, a new documentary has shown the progress made by this little boy. It has been revealed that he has managed to stay off the cigarettes, but is still dangerously unhealthy.

His mother revealed that Aldi faces temptation often:
'There are many people still offering Aldi cigarettes, but Aldi no."
However, Mrs Rizal is now worried about her son's weight, as he developed food cravings while quitting smoking, and now has a big appetite.
Mrs Rizal said the strong-willed little boy now demands food in the same way he used to beg for cigarettes, and the family struggles not to give in to his tantrums.
She said: 'When Aldi first quit smoking he would demand a lot of toys.

'He would bang his head on the wall if he couldn't get what he wanted. That's why I get him cigarettes in the first place - because of his temper and his crying.
'Now I don't give him cigarettes, but he eats a lot. With so many people living in the house it's hard to stop him from getting food.'
Mrs Rizal must also persuade Aldi's siblings and the rest of the family not to give in and provide him with junk food when she is not around.
Doctors hope that if Aldi can lose around half a stone to a stone, his weight will eventually even out as he starts to grow taller.

Brittany Murphy & Her Hubby May Have Been Poisoned According To A New Report!

Brittany Murphy & Her Hubby May Have Been Poisoned According To A New Report!

his is sad, sad, sad! Brittany Murphy passed away in 2009, and at the time, the LAPD ruled it was due to natural causes, since she had pneumonia. Then five months later, they decided her hubby Simon Monjack died of the exact same thing! Well, Brit’s dad, Angelo Bertolotti, never believed that explanation, and obtained his own blood, hair, and tissue samples to get tested by an outside lab. Sharon Murphy, the actress’s mom, has been saying that her daughter died from mold in their home, and the lab results may have confirmed that! The report read:

“Ten (10) of the heavy metals evaluated were detected at levels higher that the WHO [The World Health Organization] high levels. Testing the hair strand sample identified as “back of the head” we have detected ten (10) heavy metals at levels above the WHO high levels recommendation. If we were to eliminate the possibility of a simultaneous accidental heavy metals exposure to the sample donor then the only logical explanation would be an exposure to these metals (toxins) administered by a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent.”

W-O-A-H! They could have been poisoned?!?
Apparently, the levels of heavy metals in Brittany’s hair were at a level so high that it could have been from ingesting rat poison!
Both the actress and her hubby had the same symptoms a person with rat poisoning has, like headaches, dizziness, and disorientation.
This is just awful!
Hopefully someone will continue to look into this, because if there is a guilty party, then that person needs to be found!

How to rescue your retirement at 55

How to rescue your retirement at 55
Elizabeth MacBride CNBC

Nov. 15, 2013 at 12:51 PM ET

If you're 55 and fearing that the only way to rescue your retirement is a time machine, you are not alone. You're also not out of options.

The typical household made up of Americans in the 55-to-64 age range has accumulated only enough retirement assets — $120,000 — to produce $400 to $500 of income a month to add to Social Security payments, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances. If that sounds shockingly low, it is.

You've lost the advantage of time, which helps people in their 20s and 30s to use the power of compounding interest to reach their retirement goals, but you do have other financial tools at your disposal. The most powerful lever: capping or reducing consumption. Every dollar you don't spend in your 50s, after your kids fly the nest, pays you back twofold. Not only can you save it now, you won't feel the need of it later.

"You want to have a lifestyle you can maintain," said Alicia Munnell, director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. "It's not saying you can't enjoy yourself. You can still travel, but go off season. Use Expedia."
In the first two-thirds of your life, your goal is simple and direct: accumulate assets. As you approach retirement, your goal becomes twofold: While looking to accumulate assets, you must also preserve them to ensure a sustainable monthly income — and consider how to reduce your monthly expenses.

Reduce your consumption
One of the biggest financial mistakes parents make is increasing spending after the kids finish college and the mortgage declines. Research published in 2010 showed that households ramp up spending on things like food and travel by 51 percent on average when their children leave home.
Maintaining the frugal ways you adopted when raising your kids is a good idea. "People are surprised by how much of a difference it makes," said Steven Sass, program director of the Financial Security Project at the Center for Retirement Research.

You can play around with the assumptions here, using a tool created by the Center for Retirement Research that shows how much of a difference spending decisions of today can make later in life. Consider, for instance, the following profile:
• You are 55 and plan to retire at 62
• Unmarried
• Earning $100,000 a year
• Setting aside $500/month in your 401(k)
• Have $120,000 in retirement savings
The Center projects that, using the profile above, you will need a monthly income of $5,500 to maintain your lifestyle. But your investments and Social Security will only be producing $2,200. That's a gap of $3,300. Here's the trick: If you reduce your spending by an additional $500 a month now, you'll close the gap by $600 to $2,700, because you've reduced your needs by $500 and socked away enough to add $100 to your monthly income through investment gains. The biggest difference comes not from the investments you make, but from the reduction in spending. (The tool's earnings assumption for a portfolio investing 50 percent in stocks and 50 percent in bonds is 4.5 percent a year).

Don't plan for retirement; plan to keep working
If you're in your mid-50s, you've probably started to consider when, exactly, you will retire. Working longer means you not only extend the years you are adding to your retirement savings, but it reduces the number of years you need your savings to support you. In the example above, working in the same job for another three years, until you are 65, reduces your gap to $1,900 a month.

What if you're burnt out? If you start planning now, you may be able to find a middle road, a second career into which you can transition in your early or mid-60s. In addition, if you delay taking Social Security, the government will increase your monthly benefit. If you are 55 (born in 1958), delaying retirement until age 70 will increase your monthly Social Security benefit by about a quarter, so that if you were set to get $1,000 each month, you'll get $1,267 instead. Social Security offers a website to help you figure out how much of a difference delaying will make.

Stay in equities longer than you may think 'safe'
"Do not think you're going to invest your way out of this," said Harold Evensky, an investment adviser whose firm, Evensky & Katz LLC, is based in both Miami and Lubbock, Texas. But if you're shifting your planned retirement date, you also should extend the time frame of your investment portfolio. You can increase the chance that you'll earn a higher return by staying in equities for longer and in a greater proportion. Also, in this environment many experts say that bonds are a riskier investment than they usually are, because the government has been keeping interest rates artificially low.

In the post–World War II era, when interest rates rose after a long period of artificially low rates, bondholders lost money. "Since you will probably live to about 85, do not go into bonds until you are about 70, and then only gradually," said Charley Ellis, a consultant to governments and large institutions and a former board member of Malvern, Pa.–based Vanguard Group. (The average life expectancy for Americans is between 80 and 85).

Tap your house as an asset sooner rather than later
If you sell your house and downsize, you'll be able to use the proceeds to add to your retirement savings, tax rules permitting. You'll also be taking a huge step toward reducing your monthly expenses. Selling a house is an emotional decision for many. But if you believe you'll have to downsize eventually, the sooner you can practically make the move, the better off you will be.
